BEHAVIOR OF COLUMNS REINFORCED WITH GFRP BARS

ABSTRACT

 

The aim of this project is to analyze the behavior of short circular concrete columns reinforced with Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) bars and helices subjected to eccentric and concentric loads. GFRP, having resistance to corrosion and higher tensile strength, is emerging in both local and international markets as the possible alternative to steel.

An analytical model is developed to consider the beneficial effect of spiral confinement. Using the analytical model developed, parametric study is conducted to study effects of confinement under different parameters. These parameters include pitch of spiral, ultimate compressive strength of concrete and diameter of column. It is found with decrease of pitch, concrete strength and diameter of column the beneficial effect of confinement increases.

A comparison also drawn between GFRP and steel RC short circular column which showed that the load carrying capacity of steel RC column is 15% higher than GFRP RC column.
